What is Adult Intensive Outpatient Substance Abuse Program?

Adult Intensive Outpatient Substance Abuse Program (IOSAP) offers intensive evening treatment up to three nights a week for adults with substance abuse problems. Our goal is to provide an intensive treatment program without clients having to leave their jobs and families.

The program utilizes a step down approach, which focuses directly on the role of alcohol and drugs as they relate to problem feelings and behaviors and how problems can be solved without the use of drugs or alcohol.

Participants receive intensive education and support throughout the multiple phases of the IOP. The curriculum is designed to help participants increase their motivation to abstain from their drug of choice and to establish a recovery program for themselves.

The program addresses the needs of a whole range of adult clients whose substance use has caused problems in their lives and the lives of those who care about them. It is designed to treat alcohol and drug abuse problems no matter who needs the program or why.

Got a DUI ticket? Get treatment before facing a judge.

This treatment program is appropriate for DWI clients, probation clients, and other "mandated" clients.

  • Court Order
  • Family Pressure
  • Domestic Relations
  • Custody Issues
  • Employment Concerns

The IOP meets at least three times a week for at least a 3-hour period giving the participants a chance to make significant progress each time they attend group. The IOP provides enough group and individual time for all the clients to experience the many benefits of a treatment program while still living at home and maintaining employment.

The IOP includes, but is not limited to:

  • Individualized Treatment plans
  • Relapse Prevention
  • Drug & Alcohol Education
  • Family Education & Support
  • Support Group
  • Communication with Community Professionals (as appropriate)
  • Additional Referrals for Needed Medical, Psychiatric, or Other Services are available

Most of the work is done in a group setting. Groups include education about alcohol and drugs, how to recover and how to maintain recovery. Individual sessions are available for clients who need one-on-one contact with the therapist.

A family component is included in the program. One evening is regularly devoted to family and each participant is encouraged to bring at least one family member to group on those nights.

There is also assistance with learning about community and other types of self help groups such as AA, NA, CA, Al-Anon, Families Anonymous, etc. This type of support is often important to help maintain long-term life changes that will be gained in the IOP.

Our groups are "open" which means clients may start at almost any time. The client will be able to start within a day or two of the initial phone call

The Adult IOP is divided into three distinct phases:

  • IOP Phase 1
  • IOP Phase 2
  • IOP Phase 3

Phase 1 is appropriate for individuals who have made poor decisions around alcohol and/or other drugs repeatedly. Phase 1 focuses on education about the disease process, recovery tasks, and relapse prevention planning. The group is designed to develop skills to deal with tasks that are part of the early recovery process and to develop skills for relapse prevention. This Phase is appropriate for those individuals who have completed Phase 1 or any individual who has recently completed a residential or inpatient treatment program and is in need of an aftercare program.

Phase 2 focuses on assuming personal responsibility by making good choices as well as using the tools needed to stay on track with recovery.

Phase 3 is appropriate for those individuals who have completed Phase 2 and are dedicated to staying clean. Phase 3 focuses on the maintenance of personal recovery as well as helping individuals use community resources for on-going support.

The cost of the IOP is very competitive with other programs in the area. Most major insurance plans are accepted. The cost is far less than the cost of inpatient or residential treatment.

We are one of the state licensed, intensive programs in this area that has been carefully designed in a step-by-step fashion to achieve optimal success. The IOP professionals are licensed by the State of NJ to provide substance abuse or mental health counseling.
